Question about magic band

So I just bought the magic band (its for Christmas though so won't be able to help people out until then) but I tried it on my console and nothing happened (the base didn't light up). I already have the small world unlocked but thought the base should light up anyway as its use able in the game and just say something like already unlocked.

I then tried under a new profile and it did indeed unlock.

I just want to ask people with the band if they could try it and see if it is recognized in the game even though you've unlocked it.

Probably doesn't help much, but the 3DS version will tell you that you've already scanned it.
