Jack Sparrow-Pirate Ship question --Wii

My 6 year old got the Disney Infinity game for the Wii and is playing it mostly by himself (with help here and there from me.) He is at the point where he is steering the ship as Jack Sparrow and got the "Goin in Under Cover" mission. He is supposed to customize the ship to look like the Royal Navy. Unfortunately, Jack is stuck steering the boat, and I do not know how to leave the helm, so that he can walk around on the ship. I see that there are people on the ship to talk with as well. Can anyone give me any guidance?

It's been about a week since your post and hopefully you've figured it out. If you haven't, go to one of the smaller islands and let the first mate take the wheel so you can disembark. But instead of getting off the ship, go right down below the helm and you'll see a red x and then you'll have Customize Ship pop up. After you customize the ship to look like the Royal Navy, then you'll be able to continue the mission. Coincidentally, this is exactly where I am in the game right now. Good luck!

Lol isn't it more simpler to just save...turn off then turn it back on?

I am, too, having problems leaving the helm. I docked, but was still unable to go onto the ship and go down to the room where I can customize my ship. I don't understand why this isn't working? Anyone have any ideas? :(

 Hold down minus key to release the wheel and walk around the deck.
