Blue = Tier 1
Green = Tier 2
Red = Tier 3

This is a list that’s been developed based on their ability to succeed in PvP combat over the course of multiple tournaments and including the use of packs/tools. These are the only characters that my brother and I have tested (we decided fighting with the Cars characters wouldn’t be that fun and all other characters we don’t own). This is a tentative list and is by no means set in stone. As we play more, we realize that those who appeared good at first, have since fallen short as we have gotten more skilled and learned new tactics.

The Arena & Rules of Battle

The arena is built using stadium pieces. On each side of the arena (the sides with the shortest distance between them) is a little area for each character to start. This is comprised of tall blocks and then doors at the front. Within one is a trigger for a countdown and then in the other is a trigger for a jukebox that’s set to Tron :P There are gates all over the arena that lead to the outside. The outside is comprised of vertically placed long blocks going all around the arena and then a wall of tall blocks. This is to prevent falling off. Any kills that are delivered by knocking a person off do not count and purposefully falling off when at low health results as a loss. Originally, there were no blocks on the outside of the arena but it quickly became apparent that putting blocks would provide a healthier combat zone and limit how often we fell off.

We’re allowed to use anything we want before the countdown. So for example, characters could come out the doors invisible or running super fast if they’re Dash. The only banned packs/tools are the star command jetpack and the boost pack. I don’t know exactly why those were banned but not the hover board. It made sense at the time, haha. However, the only packs/tools we use with a high degree of frequency (other than what the characters come with) are the paintball gun and the generic invisibility.

The paintball gun is fast and shoots 8 paintballs before reloading. These features make it the best tool to use for attacking and has really defined our battles. Any character with a weakness to it (such as Woody who is stunned much longer than any other character it seems) loses competitiveness. However, it boosts the competitiveness of others such as the MU characters as their Scare ability and Shoulder Charge attack aren't a very lethal combination. However, they are very fast and when equipped with a paintball gun they become lethal.

Power Discs

We don't use the circular power disks that enhance a single player's ability (chance of invulnerability, chance of doing more damage, chance of gaining more health etc) as those grant an unfair advantage to the player equipped with the disk. Even if we had duplicates and were able to give both players the same advantage, it would still present an unwelcome element of randomness, thus they have been banned.

We do use the discs that put weapons in the toybox; they aren't often utilized, though.

How We Tested

Initially, all the characters were grouped into two pools of eight and we proceeded with a round robin tournament style. The top four characters from each pool would then move on to the single elimination rounds and would be paired up based on their records in the round robin portion.

In the beginning it was just for our enjoyment. However, as we headed into the next tournament (with some more even pools), we realized the depth of just how much the characters weren’t created equal. Thus, I proposed that we divide them into tiers so that the combat wouldn’t be so one sided half the time. The 16 characters we owned were then split into two tiers of 8 that would no longer intermix.

Tier 1

1. Vanellope
2. Wreck-It Ralph
3. Violet
4. Randy
5. Mike
6. Mickey
7. Jessie
8. Dash

Tier 2

1. Mrs. Incredible
2. Syndrome
3. Buzz
4. Mr Incredible
5. Sparrow
6. Woody
7. Sully
8. Rapunzel

As you can see, those lists are quite different from what’s presented at the top. Those were our initial impressions from our previous tournaments. However, as things progressed we developed new tactics and became better overall and thus the list shifted.

Eventually, after many rounds of tournament play, we decided that there were characters that were dominant and extremely annoying to face and in some cases, play with. (Vanellope would be a perfect example of this). Thus, we removed the top 4 (from the list presented at the beginning (Dash, Vanellope, Violet and Randy)) from our foreseeable future tournaments. Maybe one day, if there seems to be a reasonable cause to do so, we’ll go back and they’ll fight but for now we’ll just not play with them.

However, it became clear that Wreck-It Ralph instantly became the character to beat. He had been a formidable opponent when facing the Top 4 as well, but he’d appeared vulnerable to ground pounds that broke up his basic attack spam (we nicknamed that Machine Gun Fists :p) and the counterattacks that followed. When faced up against his new foes though, we discovered that performing a counter ground pound when his opponent does will help mitigate what was previously seen as his biggest weakness.

After Ralph went undefeated (he had a few tough matches but for the most part it was a blow out) he was banished with the Top 4. I believe he deserves a higher spot on the list as the ground pounds that once plagued him could now be mitigated by our newly developed tactic; however, I don’t have actual proof of this theory so I’ve kept him at 5th place

In addition to Ralph’s banishment, we pushed Rapunzel to the side. This was not because she was overpowered, but rather that she seemed completely incapable of winning. While Woody and Sully, the other two Tier 3ers, would manage wins on occasion, the thought of Rapunzel winning became a joke. Ralph’s successes and Rapunzel’s failures are well illustrated in the following table (the table encompasses data from multiple tournaments):

Image

Tourney App = How many tournaments they’ve been in

Place by Point Totals: My brother thought it was important to give the characters a point for each
match they won thus since Ralph has the highest amount of match wins (as seen in the overall record) he’s 1st

Game Record: We didn’t always record (we will now hehe) whether or not the wins were 2-1 or 2-0 so the game record isn’t completely accurate. Also for Rapunzel’s, my bro made this in excel and it seems to autocorrect 4-54 to 4/1/1954 LOL

Kills to Death: Literally pointless idk why he made this column and I felt I should include it for his sake

R.R. Record = a character’s record during the round robin portion

Clash final app = how many times a character made it to the final match of a tournament

Super clash tops = how many times a character made it into the single elimination portion

Clash bracket record = a character’s record during the single elimination portion

Clash finals victories = how many times a character has won a tournament

Moving into future tournaments, we experienced a greater degree of character equality as a majority of what was now considered tier 2 (or really the only playable tier, what with the top 5 characters banished and the bottom of the barrel pushed to the sidelines) was more well balanced, however, there were definite outliers. On one end of the scale, you had characters like Mike, Mickey and Buzz who were clearly fighting above the crowd. Falling back into the bottom of the barrel, you had Sheriff Woody with his perpetual weakness to paintball guns and inability to escape any kind of stun.

Eventually we decided to throw four more characters up with the unplayables in the banished 5 and hash it out again in tier 1 since clearly the ex-tier 1's were functioning on a different level than the tier 2ers. This resulted in more of the same and a few new things.

-It solidified my theory on Wreck-It Ralph being prematurely cast out from the top 4 as he seemed rather unbeatable till he met up with his candy coated princess friend, Vanellope Von Schweetz
-It showed who the top 4 really are as Randy fell from grace, having a truly astonishing 0-8 record despite his previous claim of dominance. This lead to some reexamination and it seemed like Randy's track record wasn't as shining as the one tournament in which he went head to head with Vanellope in the finals lead us to believe.
-It demonstrated just how above the others the top 4 really are, isolating all but themselves from the single elimination portion of the tournament. Vanellope, Ralph, Violet and Dash truly seem to be in a league far removed from the others.

This leaves us with several characters who are too good for a broad portion of what was previously considered (broad) tier 2 (everyone on the list except Vanellope, Randy, Dash, Violet and Ralph) and characters who've clearly landed themselves at the bottom with Rapunzel. With these things plain to see, I believe the future will hold further tier 2 & 3 character experimentation. With the addition of Jack Skellington, Tonto, and the Lone Ranger to the list (once we've finished our initial testing) I believe we'll be able to hold competitions within tier 2 & 3 akin to the ones we've had before.

Recent Update

The tiers definitely shook themselves out with the completion of the recent tournament that crowned James P. Sullivan as the victor. After a great deal of play, it appears his potential has finally been realized. I think what happened was we just learned how to play with him better.

Sparrow, however, has shown a greater and much longer lived dominance of the tier 2 characters and despite his weakness to Sully, is higher on the list because of these things.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto, who are practically identical twins, proved themselves to be precisely middle of the road, decent all around, we're not breaking anything but we're not terrible either characters and have been placed accordingly. Jack Skellington, however, proved to be relative garbage in the context of PvP fighting. Such a shame for the pumpkin king ):

Character Analysis

Note: At some point (can't remember exactly), my brother and I decided that if the first game of a match (match=best 2 out of 3) went beyond 3 minutes, that game would decide the match just to save time. Most of the times of those games were recorded.

Dash

Spoiler: show
He is one of the few characters who can keep pace with Vanellope while she’s using her dodge move. His speedy, up close and personal basic attack makes him almost invincible against someone who isn’t fast enough to break away and an incredible nuisance to someone that is like Vanellope or Randy. I recommend avoiding his super speed character move as it’s difficult to control. Focus on getting up close asap and if a character does manage to distance itself from you, retaliate with a paintball gun and focus on moving in again to utilize your basic attack.

Vanellope Von Schweetz

Spoiler: show
She is an annoyingly fast character with a dodge move that’s unparalleled by any other. Her ability to distance herself from a character with near invulnerability to any attacks from her pursuer is by far her most defining attribute. Combine this with a paintball gun and she becomes a force to be reckoned with. Her biggest problem is that her basic attack is difficult to get off at most times and thus she relies heavily on her paintball gun to get her kills. Vanellope’s biggest weakness is to characters who have the ability to pin her down. Dash and Wreck-It Ralph have proven most capable of doing this with their basic attacks.

Violet (my personal favorite)

Spoiler: show
She’s by far the slowest member of the Top 4 and what she lacks in speed she makes up for in raw power. Her basic attack is extremely powerful and has incredible range. It’s also when she’s at her fastest as it propels her across the field in pursuit against her opponent. In addition to her force field hurling basic attack, her natural invisibility gives her the ability to mount lethal sneak attacks as she is able to shoot a paintball gun while invisible (which she can then follow up upon with her deadly basic attack). Her biggest weakness is her inability to dodge quickly and if she gets down to low health she has a limited ability to escape a conflict without switching from a paintball gun to invisibility. Secondly, if her opponent manages to distance itself from her (as many characters possess far greater speed in their dodge moves than she does) she is hard pressed to follow which gives adversaries a great deal of healing time.

Randy Boggs

Spoiler: show
Randy is incredibly fast. He can roll circles around his opponents with ease and needs nearly no recovery time from dodging, delivering a ground pound, or taking an attack before he can be attacking or on the move again. His speed is his most defining trait and when combined with a paintball gun he becomes a frightening foe. He’s very similar to Vanellope and nearly as fast. He lacks her near invulnerability, though.

Wreck-It Ralph

Spoiler: show
His paralyzing basic attack is by far his most defining feature and on top of that, despite his size, he’s quite quick. His surprising nimbleness, combined with his rampage of a basic attack give him the ability to quite literally wreck anyone in his path. When paired with a paintball gun, his opponents are hard pressed to put Wreck-It Ralph on the run. His biggest weakness is being out sped and thus outmaneuvered. If a fast moving character can outmaneuver Ralph, he becomes a large target for his opponent’s paintball gun.

Sorcerer Mickey

Spoiler: show
Mickey is very similar to Vanellope in terms of his speed. He needs very little time to recover from dealing or receiving blows and is thus very difficult to pin down. His biggest problem comes in delivering the final blow. His basic attack is difficult to line up correctly without receiving a magazine of paintballs in the face or a shoulder charge. His most lethal weapons come in the form of his ground pound and an equipped paintball gun. Paintball guns also seem to have the ability to stun him easier than other characters.

Spoiler: show
He was right when he said he was the fastest one out on the field. He’s yet another speedy character. Despite his size, he seems to have an easy time of landing a shoulder charge and when equipped with a paintball gun he’s a force to be reckoned with. His speed is his most defining attribute. He shares weaknesses similar to those of Vanellope and Randy.

Buzz Lightyear

Spoiler: show
If you’re looking for a character who is just the right speed, with just the right amount of power, to be successful but not broken, if you’re looking for a well rounded average joe of a character, you’ve found him! His ability to roll circles around his opponents, while not with the speed of someone like Mike Wazowski, gives him the necessary edge against faster characters who are up close and personal like Jack Sparrow. However, he does seem to have a slight weakness to paintballs. He is stunned for slightly longer than other characters (much like Mickey). His shoulder charge and well ranged ground pound attack with the obligatory paint gun make him difficult to beat.

Captain Jack Sparrow

Spoiler: show
He’s very much like a slower Dash. He gets up close and stabby with his sword very quickly and immediately puts his opponents on the defensive. The best way to maneuver out of his attacks is breaking free with dodges, countering with a ground pound, and following up with a round of paintballs to put some breathing room between you and the ferocious Captain. His speed and tricky-to-escape basic attack are Sparrow’s most defining feature and if it wasn’t for his unfortunate vulnerability to paintball gun assaults (he’s not the best at dodging) he’d probably be higher up on the list.

Syndrome

Spoiler: show
He is quite the powerhouse. His basic attack gets him up close fast. The most important part of it, however, is landing the last hit of his three attack combo which sends his opponent flying through the air. This leaves them incredibly vulnerable to a paintball gun attack and if successful will most likely put them in red health and on the defensive. Syndrome’s biggest flaw is his medium speed. He’s fast but not enough to create easy distance between himself and an adversary easily. Additionally, his basic attack is not very good at working while his opponents are using their dodge moves and if his opponent has shoulder charge, using his basic attack while they’re using their dodge+dodge+basic combo will leave him very vulnerable to a successfully landed shoulder charge.

Jessie The Cowgirl

Spoiler: show
Her biggest advantage is her speed. She’s fast enough to hang with the higher tier characters but her unfortunate vulnerability to paintball guns leaves her borderline low tier. Paintball guns are excellent at stunning her and keeping her there for multiple paintballs. If it were not for this, her speed and excellent ground pound would make her a fearsome fighting force with the obligatory paintball gun.

Mrs. Incredible

Spoiler: show
She has an excellent range. Her basic attack, combined with the paintball gun, give any opponent on the run a difficult time of actually fleeing. Her basic attack also gives her the ability to propel herself across the field and come up close and personal. Her biggest problem is her speed. She’s incredibly slow and thus has a hard time dodging attacks. Her best method at countering other up close melee attacks like those from Jack Sparrow, Dash or Wreck It Ralph are delivering a ground pound, pushing her opponent back with a paintball gun and following up with basic. The ground pound is key in her defense.

He is a slightly slower version of syndrome, boasting similar moves with around the same amount of punch. His biggest problem is his speed and the fact that shoulder chargers easily punch him around when he’s using his basic attack.

James P. Sullivan

Spoiler: show
He is the slowest of the MU characters and thus the lowest ranking (speed = high tier for the most part). His speed is his biggest problem. His best match-ups are against the slower characters with the exception of having a difficult-to-understandly grand match-up against Jack Sparrow. His character is bulky but strong.

Sheriff Woody

Spoiler: show
He’s a slower version of Jessie with an even bigger weakness to paintball guns! If he gets hit by one paintball, he’ll most likely get hit by five more before his opponent even has to reload. His speed and ability to roll in circles around his opponent has yielded him a small margin of success, but for the most part all someone needs to beat him is a well aimed paintball (as this leads to many more).

Rapunzel

Spoiler: show
Her basic attack is ridiculously slow and while she can dodge and move faster than most of the incredibles her inability to attack swiftly is what really puts her at the bottom. If she had a more efficient basic attack she’d probably be higher on the list.

He's not a character with a lot to boast. He's fairly slow, albeit gifted with a far better dodge than his pirate companions, and while his 5 part basic attack gets him up close and personal like the others, his speed and vulnerability to paintballs puts him lower on the list.

Spoiler: show
He seems so similar to Jack Sparrow that it's really difficult to say why it is he's so much lower. My brother hypothesizes that it has something to do with him being a tad bit slower than Sparrow and even that small difference has condemned him to a lower ranking but I'm not entirely convinced.

Tonto

Spoiler: show
Tonto is a relatively fast character who's been blessed/cursed with the basic attack of "charge". He's blessed because this greatly enhances his "dodge+dodge+basic attack" combo, allowing him to roll around his opponents while using them as a punching bag but cursed because this move can be difficult to get off and is rather bland and one dimensional. His Tomahawk attack, while more useful than other characters' triggers, is not nearly as powerful as the paintball gun. In form and function, it is faster than Rapunzel's frying pan but it does far less stun. He's a pretty well rounded character.

Spoiler: show
The Lone Ranger is extremely similar to Tonto with the only real difference being their two different trigger moves. He's fast but not too fast and has the blessed but cursed "charge" move as his basic attack.

Jack Skellington

Spoiler: show
Jack is relatively slow and extremely lacking in power. His basic attack, a scare combo attack, while doing a great deal in the field of being a stun filled annoyance to your opponent, it does very little in the damage category. His trigger attack of throwing demonic pumpkins is only really useful when far away and is far outmatched by the paintball gun.

Questions For You

What do you think of this? Have you tried PvP yourself and found similar results? Have you found other characters not on this list performing better than ones that are? Are paintball guns blasphemy? Is the only proper arena to fight in the empty toybox? Basically, what are your thoughts? Don't hesitate to ask any questions of me if you're confused about anything I said in this post.

Looking To The Future

I'll be working on adding a packs/tools analysis portion to this thread as recent experimentation has shed some light on useful items that aren't the paintball gun or invisibility device. The additions of Elsa and Anna will also be something I'll be working on adding once we finish our initial testing. Blocking has slowly become a more developed tactic and I'm gonna be adding a section on it soon.

Copying much? Eh, I guess mine will be the official one and yours can be a variation.

Re: PvP Character Tier List

Postby Jack Frost » Sat Feb 15, 2014 9:15 pm

The only list that I was aware of on this site, prior to making this thread, was this one (which, btw, was made before yours): viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2840

So, no I was not copying your tier list. I just found your thread today when it showed up on the new posts feed. I don't see how debating "who was first" or fighting for a claim of originality is beneficial. I didn't make this thread to usurp any kind of "officialness" your thread presented or upstage you or copy you. I made this thread to share my experiences with the game and hopefully spark a discussion. I had been saddened to see that the thread I linked, which was the only list I knew of at the time, had only 5 responses. I wanted more discussion.

Quick question. Why does it say #YOLOSWAG next to syndrome?

#YOLO - He wears a cape against the sage advice of Edna Mode!
#SWAG - He walks in the game like he's the coolest thing ever.

My brother and I liked to joke that it was Syndrome's swag that would grant him his victories. LOL.

Could you help me shed some light on which Tier list is more accurate in who is stronger, yours or Woody7850's? I can't tell!

Re: PvP Character Tier List

I want to say mine is the official tier list, but it's honestly dependent on choice.

His list uses packs and tools, saying that they are part of DI's combat and that items should be legal in competitive play.

Mine focuses on the sole abilities on the character, because, well, do you normally see items in a professional SSB tournament? Recently, however, I have added limited use of packs and tools (both characters have to be using the same items, and transport tools are banned).

I'm going with mine, due to problems with this one and expanded playstyles I can come up with.
