How does it feel to ride in a plane?

Since this is random and pointless to DI, figured I post in one of the 'blah, blah, blah' forums.
Anyway, my family is about to take a trip to California, and since it's really far, we'll be taking a plane. I'm the type of guy who hates things like roller coasters or something, and I'm kinda worried that riding in a plane will be like that. I think it won't be, but just for some reassurance (and maybe even some other tips), how does it feel to ride in a plane?

I have been on a plane multiple times before, our family travels a lot.
i am actually going on one down to Orlando for Disney World and Universal on August Ninth!
Anyways, most of the time, you cannot even tell the plane is moving. It is nothing like riding in a car.
In a car, you feel the rumbling and hear the engine.
Planes are actually quite relaxing at times. The only time you notice you are moving is at takeoff and landing.
Takeoff and landing might seem somewhat frightening, but I anticipate it, it is really fun.
Nothing like a roller coaster though.

So don't get that irrational fear like I used to have

I don't really like roller coasters myself. With that in mind I've been flying my whole life. I flew by myself at age 6 and 8 from California to Texas. Take off is like speeding up in a car and you can feel the ground. Suddenly its smooth once you are off the ground. Landing is slightly bumpy but then you get the brake feeling once you are on the ground. Yes there can be air turbulence. Its only bad if you go through a storm or clouds. California rarely has both.

The only time you notice anything different than travelling by another form of transport I'd the take off and landing because when your in the air you don't feel like your even moving. Been to america and back and to London and back (I'm from the UK) and the only thing I didn't like was sitting there for 7-8 hours lol

Thanks guys for all the info! Now I've heard something about your ears 'popping' during takeoff, when does this usually happen?

It happens to some people but it never ever happened to me. People say having a hard boiled sweet prevents it though

Right as you are getting a reasonable distance in the air, I'd say about five minutes or so after take off. Just chew some gum and you will be fine.
I prefer cinnamon gum, it works the best to keep from headaches an ears popping when you are taking off. But it isn't that bad at all.
