I don't know. In an E3 interview, they said that the GamePad is a necessity for launching yourself around the map.

Does anyone feel it doesn't look like a nintendo game, I'm sure it's good but to me it doesn't feel and look like a nintendo game

I guess it means Nintendo is being more open to what kind of games to support. Splatoon is not an idea of nintendo, but nintendo is publishing it for them. Hopefully it will become modern Nintendo classic! (Sequels, recognized as being a Nintendo type of game, etc)
