Mighty No. 9 Beta Starts Tomorrow

The first beta for Mighty No. 9 will start tomorrow, the game's creator Keiji Inafune announced today at his PAX 2014 panel.

Kickstarter backers who pledged at the tiers that gave them access to the beta ($80 or more) will be able to download a build of the game that includes only the fifth level. However, over the next few weeks, the Mighty No. 9 development team will keep adding more content until beta testers will have access to a total of three levels.

Inafune also revealed that all Mighty No. 9 backers will get a free copy of Mighty Gunvolt, a 8-bit reimagining of the 2D action platformer Azure Striker Gunvolt developed by Inti Creates, which Inafune worked on as an "honorary action director." Fans who were lucky enough to attend Inafune's panel received a free copy of Mighty No. 9, free access to the beta, as well as a free copy of Mighty Gunvolt.

During the panel, Inafune said the team has spent the last year working on Mighty No. 9's core mechanics, but that they already completed work on a few key assets, abilities, and bosses. Inafune also showed a short video demonstrating a competitive online race mode for Mighty No. 9, though he said that he hasn't decided if it will make it into the final game.

Mighty No. 9 is becoming a reality thanks to an overwhelmingly successful Kickstarter campaign, which rocketed past its $900,000 goal, ending with $3.8 million last year. The side-scrolling action game is being worked on by Inafune himself and a team of designers at his studio, Comcept.

The final game is expected to launch by April 2015 for PC, Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and 3DS.

I have both PS4 and Wii U but I feel obliged to get this game on Wii U... Simply because most of the good Mega Man games were released on Nintendo platforms. This game feels at home at a Nintendo platform to me.

Azure Striker Gunvolt includes free Might No. 9 crossover minigame

Players who hop on the Azure Striker Gunvolt bandwagon when it launches in the 3DS eShop next week will receive a free bonus minigame that features a playable character from fellow Keiji Inafune project Mighty No. 9.

Mighty Gunvolt is a five-level, NES-styled platformer starring Azure Striker's Gunvolt, Mighty No. 9 main character Beck, and Ekoro, a supporting character from developer Inti Creates' Japan-only rail shooter Gal*Gun. Players who purchase Azure Striker Gunvolt within its first three months of release will receive a download code for Mighty Gunvolt once it premieres in the 3DS eShop.

Azure Striker Gunvolt launches digitally in North America on August 29.

MIGHTY NO. 0 COULD BE IN MIGHTY NO. 9 HERE’S THE POTENTIAL BONUS DLC TEASER

Comcept Japan is teasing possible Mighty No. 9 additional downloadable content in a recent video update. The bonus trailer gives us a peek at Mighty No.0 who is meant to be Zero. He basically resembles both Bass and Zero. Mighty No. 9 is scheduled to be released for the majority of video game formats in 2015.

^Yep! :D

Speaking of DLC:

Comcept Need Another $190,000 To Put Beck’s Rival In Mighty No. 9

Comcept have shared a few more details about their planned “potential DLC” for Mighty No. 9, which they teased a few weeks back. This DLC, Comcept say, is another piece of content that depends on extra funding from slacker-backers.
The plan is for the DLC to feature a new level and boss—Beck’s rival, Ray. (That’s a tentative name for now.) Ray has a hole in his chest where his core should be, and is slowly deteriorating over time. Like Beck, he can absorb other robots, but unlike Beck, he actually needs to absorb others in order to survive.
So, how much will it cost to incorporate Ray and his stage into the game? $198,000, apparently. Comcept have provided a breakdown of the costs, and this is what it looks like:
Game design (character + stage): $19,000
Graphic design (character + stage): $14,000
Modeling (character + stage): $25,000
Animation (character + stage): $50,000
Effects (character + stage) $24,000
2D assets (stage): $6,000
3D assets (stage): $20,000
Programming (character + stage): $32,000
Sound (character + stage): $8,000
Total: $198,000
Comcept say they worked with developer Inti Creates to come up with that figure, which they claim is a “safe estimate” based on their early ideas for the stage. While the total comes to $198,000, the developer says they’ll make Ray accessible to all backers via a DLC code, even if they can gather up $190,000.

Edit:

Mighty No. 9's hero looks a little less like Mega Man now

Comcept's Mighty No. 9 has been an obvious spiritual successor to Capcom's Mega Man franchise, but the development team under Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune is making a slight change to the game's hero that makes him look a little less like the Blue Bomber.

In a Kickstarter update, Comcept revealed a change to Mighty No. 9's Beck, who's no longer a bluish-gray. From now on, he's mostly white, a change that game director Koji Imaeda explains.

"From the very beginning we designed Beck to have a neutral, grey base, with the idea of wanting to make something completely new and unique," Imaeda said. "But development soldiered on, and as we approached the last leg, we started looking closer at Beck. As a protagonist that could absorb the abilities of his siblings and take on various forms, our image of his appropriate color shifted from 'neutrality' to 'containing all possibilities'... and since white is a combination of all colors of light, we felt that would actually suit his character better!"

Clearly, Beck still retains a lot of design elements that give the character a Mega Man vibe, but it's interesting to see Comcept make the change this far into development.

Mighty No. 9 is slated to come to a wide range of platforms — Nintendo 3DS, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Developer Comcept is planning on an April 2015 release.
