Frozen Freefall - why does it have lives?

I was playing around with this game:

https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/frozen-free-fall/id692412579

I got to level 12 and kept failing the puzzle, with the announcement that I was out of lives.

I was then asked to purchase some more lives (cost 99cents), which I declined to do.

And then this timer started ticking down in the upper corner.
Currently it says 3 lives, 20:40.
I assume you get a new life every 30 minutes, up to a maximum of 5.

But why would you put this mechanic in a puzzle game? :?
It doesn't seem normal!

It's probably just a way to make more money. Since the game is difficult, I think they thought that you wouldn't want to wait half an hour for another try.

Yup, that's common in free app games, time things to get money from people who do not want to wait.

Is that an actual game?

I tend to avoid generic Disney games, because they're usually pink princess games.
Or the characters I want aren't featured enough, so I'm just not engaged.

At least with this one, I can see Anna or Elsa standing off to the side while I play. :D
I assume I'm looking at the kiddie versions, since they don't appear to be adults.
And yes, I'm often saying (in my head), awww, so cute!

To me, it doesn't seem practical to put a timer on lives in this game.
What if I was taking my iPhone somewhere without internet connectivity or to a place where it's illegal to engage wireless mode?
For example, on airplanes or in airports.
If I'm playing the game to pass the time and fail the puzzle, I'm forced to wait for the timer to restore my lives to try again. :(

Also, when I investigated the costs of paying for an internet plan for the iPhone and it was prohibitively expensive.
It costs more then as my current isp plan!
So I worked around it by instructing my Mac laptop to broadcast my isp connection via wi-fi.
Of course, that only works when the iPhone is in the house, within the range of the wi-fi signal my laptop is broadcasting.
