No more Direct-to-DVD sequels?

No more Direct-to-DVD sequels?

Postby KyletheCartoonist » Tue Apr 23, 2013 2:13 am

I've noticed a decrease of direct-to-DVD sequels.
Planes was a direct-to-DVD sequel, but now it seems to be a theater production.
Because of this and the fact that a Pirates of the Caribbean direct-to-DVD sequel hasn't been made, I think that it is highly likely that Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph will be getting theater sequels.
I don't want to jinx anything, but let's keep our hopes up.

The Tangled sequel was a mini movie that was released, at least here in the UK, on the Beauty and the Beast blu-ray. I haven't heard of any plans for anymore sequels.
MPK for short.

UK Retail Releases: 2.0 Edition, 3.0 Edition

When John Lasseter became Chief Creative Officer of Disney Feature Animation in 2006, one of his first directives was to put an end to what was referred to as the "Cheapquels" that he felt was damaging the Disney brand.

I don't count Tangled Ever After as a sequel, I count it as a short film, like the Toy Story Shorts (I think they're called that?).

I knew about this a while ago, and this is why I'm personally not worried about Disney/Pixar sequels any more. Heck, despite all the backlash it got, I actually liked Cars 2 anyway! Even if I don't like the sequels I'll just ignore them anyway.
It should be noted that not all of the DTDVD movies are bad though. But well... I've only ever seen the Lion King ones :P (1 1/5 was awesome.)
