Pacific Rim

Postby krisko612 » Mon Jul 29, 2013 4:51 am

Did anybody here see Pacific Rim? I saw it on Wednesday, and to be honest, I was actually kind of disappointed. The robots vs. monsters action was amazing, but the stuff in-between was so-so. The film is hamstrung by bland characters and poorly explained and or inconsistent elements that make it hard to care about said characters. Overall, I wasn't that impressed,.

^^ @krisko612 ... That is a perfect review. That is exactly what I thought. I thought the fights between the monsters and the robots were choreographed very well. In fact, they could have just given me an hour and a half of that, and I would have been just fine with it.

I'm afraid if a Pacific Rim sequel were to come out I would probably skip it.

In a shocking turn of events, Pacific Rim has now grossed more money than the Avengers...in China.

I actually really liked Pacific Rim.. though I saw it in IMAX 3D. It was a movie designed to see it on the IMAX screen. The storyline was lackluster at best, but that action on IMAX 3D was just fantastic.

I saw Pacific Rim.

Overall, I thought it was a great movie.

However, there was one part I found problematic.

I'll try to explain.

The Jaigers used always had the control center in the head.
And well, that was the first thing the Kaiju ripped off!

Keep in mind Jaigers are machines, not organic creatures.

There's a design philosophy with mechanoids that the brain need not necessarily be in the head, since they don't have internal organs taking up the space.

For examples:
Transformers have a secondary brain in their chest (where organics normally have their lungs).
Kryten from Red Dwarf, his brain was actually in his stomach (it's behind the white disc).

So, if I'd been the one building the Jaigers, I'd have put the control center in the stomach and the head would just be a red herring, since there's no actual pilot in there.

Plus, even if the head was ripped off, the rest of the Jaiger would just kept fighting while the Kaiju tried to work out where the pilot was.
And since the next targets were the arms and legs, the Kaiju would be dead long before it figured out where the pilot station actually was.
