Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Clip 4

Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier - TV Spot 11

Weekend Report: With Big 'Avengers' Bump, 'Captain America' Sets April Record

Eschewing a typical Summer release, Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened to a very strong $95 million this weekend. That's a new record for the month of April ahead of Fast Five's $86.2 million.

The Winter Soldier is also doing strong business overseas, where it has already topped the first movie's $194 million total.

Riding a wave of goodwill from 2012's The Avengers, The Winter Soldier's domestic debut is a 46 percent improvement over the first Captain America's opening. That's the biggest "Avengers bump" yet: Iron Man 3 was up 36 percent, while Thor: The Dark World improved 30 percent. Speaking of The Dark World: Captain America's debut is noticeably higher than that movie's $85.7 million.

Still, Captain America: The Winter Soldier couldn't quite match the original Iron Man, which opened to $98.6 million back in 2008 (before most moviegoers were even familiar with The Avengers).

It's abundantly clear that, as one of the highest-grossing movies ever, The Avengers substantially increased the number of fans for its individual characters. Captain America's performance may be the most impressive yet: not only did it grow nearly 50 percent from its predecessor, it did so without the addition of 3D (the first installment was already in 3D).

Credit is due to a marketing campaign that made clear this was an action-packed extension of The Avengers that introduced new characters and pushed the story forward an interesting way. It's likely that positive reviews had an impact as well.

The Winter Soldier's audience was 64 percent male, which is a slight increase over the Thor sequel (62 percent). They awarded the movie an "A" CinemaScore, which correlates nicely with the reviews (89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes).

Showings in 3D accounted for 40 percent of the Captain's opening. Meanwhile, with nine of the 10 highest-grossing screens, IMAX contributed $9.6 million.

If Captain America: The Winter Soldier follows Thor: The Dark World's pattern, it will end up with nearly $230 million total. With a stronger response from audiences and no serious competition until The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a total north of $250 million seems like a safe bet.

Around-The-World Roundup

Captain America: The Winter Soldier expanded in to 50 total markets (92 percent of international marketplace) and earned an impressive $107.1 million this weekend. Overall, The Winter Soldier has already grossed $207 million, which is ahead of the first movie's $194 million total.

Captain America opened to $39.2 million in China, which is Disney's biggest three-day opening ever there (Iron Man 3 earned $64.5 million over five days). It also took first place in Russia ($7.4 million) and Australia ($6 million), and continued to play well in holdover markets. Captain America expands in to Brazil next weekend, followed by Japan on the 19th.

Captain America Marches to #1 in the World
Marvel's 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' opened #1 with the largest April box office ever!

Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" flung his shield back into theaters this weekend, and audiences stood at attention as Cap earned the top spot in the domestic box office with $95 million, setting the record for the biggest opening weekend in April ever and making the film the number one movie in the world!

"On behalf of the entire cast and crew of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier,' I'd like to thank our incredible fans for not only making us the number one movie in the world this weekend, but helping us yet again break box office records," said producer Kevin Feige.

The First Avenger also continued to take the world by storm, earning $209.1 million internationally to date for a worldwide total of $304.1 million so far! In only 10 days of release, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has already surpassed the total international box office of 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger."

Weekend Report: 'Captain America' Wins Close Fight with 'Rio 2'

In a strange turn of events, Rio 2 took first place at the box office on Friday, but fell back to second place for the three-day weekend. Chalk this up to nice weather throughout most of the country, which kept family audiences away from the multiplexes on Saturday.

As a result, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was able to narrowly hold on to the top spot for the second-straight weekend. The superhero sequel added $41.3 million, which was off 57 percent from its debut. That's about on par with Iron Man 3 (58 percent) and Thor: The Dark World (57 percent), but it's also a bit worse than the movie's strong reviews and word-of-mouth would suggest.

So far, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has earned $158.9 million at the domestic box office. If it remains on pace with the Thor and Iron Man sequels, it will finish with at least $225 million.

Around-the-World Roundup

Captain America: The Winter Soldier added $60.6 million. Its only major new territory was Brazil, where it took first place with $5.9 million. Captain's biggest market so far is China, where it's already earned a remarkable $80.4 million (more than the next three markets combined).

To date, Captain America has grossed $317.7 million overseas, which is more than any of the first five Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Worldwide, it blew past Captain America: The First Avenger, and has so far earned nearly $477 million. It reaches its final market, Japan, next weekend.

Weekend Report: 'Captain' Three-peats, 'Heaven' Rises Over Easter Weekend

Among new releases, faith-based drama Heaven is for Real destroyed Johnny Depp's Transcendence this weekend. Still, it couldn't match Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which held on to first place for the third weekend in a row.

The Marvel sequel added $25.6 million this weekend, which represents a light 38 percent decline. It reached $200 million on Sunday, and should pass Thor: The Dark World in the next few days.

Around-the-World Roundup

Captain America: The Winter Soldier added $35.3 million this weekend. It opened to a weak $2 million in Japan; none of these movies do particularly well there, though. In comparison, Captain America's top market is China with $98.4 million. So far, Captain America has earned $385 million overseas, and should eventually top Thor: The Dark World ($438 million).

Gotta agree with you there. Iron man 3 and amazing Spider-Man 2 tie for second.
