Official synopsis of X-Men: Apocalypse

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”

Exclusive: First ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Trailer Is Attached to ‘Star Wars’

The opening weekend of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to be massive. It may or may not break the record, but the film will have the widest release of all time, meaning it will be in front of a lot of eyeballs not only opening weekend, but throughout the Christmas break and through New Years. As a result, every studio in town wants to attach its biggest trailers in front of Star Wars. What better way to announce your big 2016 films than by introducing them to a gargantuan number of people at once?

We’ve already reported that the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War will be attached to The Force Awakens, which was pretty much a given since both films are distributed by the same studio. But we can now break the news that the first trailer for Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse will also be attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, meaning Fox was able to score prime placement for director Bryan Singer’s superhero sequel.

X-Men: Apocalypse co-writer/producer Simon Kinberg revealed the trailer premiere placement to us in a wide-ranging conversation with Steve earlier today, adding that we can expect something along the lines of a teaser, though maybe a tiny bit more substantial:

“I can in fact confirm that information. Our first trailer will be on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s our first thing out there so it is somewhat of a teaser but it’s certainly longer than a minute and it has a ton of cool stuff in it.”

X-Men: Apocalypse promises even more Magneto power

X-Men: Apocalypse’s title not only spotlights the power-hungry villain played by Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) in the latest installment in the blockbuster X-Men franchise, it also not-so-subtly teases the destruction that takes place on screen.

Awakened after thousands of years, ancient mutant Apocalypse (Isaac) believes the world needs a massive reboot and tasks his Four Horsemen — Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Angel (Ben Hardy) — with helping him initiate epic annihilation. It’s up to the X-Men, including Charles (James McAvoy) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), to stop the carnage, but the good guys have their work cut out for them: The Four Horsemen are awarded certain perks for joining the big bad’s team.

“One of Apocalypse’s many powers is he can imbue other mutants with greater ones,” says director Bryan Singer. Case in point: In the concept art image (above), Singer says, “Magneto is demonstrating a small taste of what he can do now. Magneto is already enormously powerful…. Now Apocalypse gives him powers far beyond what we’ve seen before.” Something tells us this will get very messy.

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released May 27.
