Weekend Report: 'LEGO Movie' Dominates President's Day Weekend

With its strong date night appeal, About Last Night opened strong on Valentine's Day and wound up ahead of fellow 80s remakes RoboCop and Endless Love this weekend. Still, it was no match for The LEGO Movie, which easily led the box office over President's Day weekend.

In its second outing, The LEGO Movie added $49.8 million. That's a very light 28 percent drop, which is way ahead of most comparable titles (for example, The Lorax fell 45 percent in its second weekend). For the four-day frame, LEGO earned $62.5 million, which ranks second all-time for President's Day weekend.

So far, LEGO has earned $142.8 million, and remains on track to easily surpass $200 million.

The LEGO Movie Sequel is Officially Set for May 26, 2017!

ComingSoon.net

Weekend Report: 'LEGO' Obliterates '3 Days,' 'Pompeii'

For the third weekend in a row, The LEGO Movie easily took first place at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, 3 Days to Kill and Pompeii both attracted little interest from moviegoers.

The LEGO Movie fell 37 percent to $31.3 million. That's the second-highest third weekend ever for an animated movie behind Shrek 2 ($37.9 million). Through 17 days the movie has earned $183 million, and Warner Bros. recently announced that they are moving ahead with a sequel (currently scheduled for Memorial Day 2017).

The LEGO Movie continued to do steady business overseas. The movie added $23.1 million, which includes new markets France ($3 million) and Italy ($2.3 million). It's top territory was the U.K., where it eased five percent to $9.4 million. To date, 'LEGO' has earned $92.5 million overseas, and still has Russia, Japan, Australia and Germany on the way.

Sooo... I just came back from seeing The LEGO Movie, and I have got to say! Look at how awesome it was! They had Han solo and Chewbacca taking Batman for a joyride on the Millennium Falcon, and hilariously ending up doing nothing but pointlessly playing space checkers which was epic! They also had Gandalf make fun of Professor Dumbledore. The best part of it all was getting to see Benny the 1980-something space guy obsessed with 1980's stuff and most of all, build that spaceship! When he did, it was one the best parts of the movie! Great to see that Millhouse van Houten made it into the film as a master builder! Should of been Bart, homer or Martin prince who made it into the film as a Master builder though. The ending of the movie was interesting.... don't see much point in a sequel anymore. Since they are....I would love to see Lego Marvel superheroes, disney, pixar and Indiana Jones in there!
Overall great movie! Thanks to lego for putting in pretty much all the lego themes I wanted in there except for the few I stated above. This was a pretty epic movie except when It came to the ending where
Spoiler: show
It was realized that everything in the movie was all just a childhood game in the midst of a major celebrity's basement.

After leading the box office for three-straight weeks, The LEGO Movie took third place with an estimated $21 million. Among fourth weekends, LEGO's ranks 16th all-time. On Saturday, The LEGO Movie became the first 2014 release to pass $200 million; if it can hold up against Mr. Peabody & Sherman next weekend, there's a chance that it ultimately gets to $300 million.

Two animated hits are leading the way so far this year. The LEGO Movie is number one so far with $236.9 million (as of Sunday), which accounts for nearly 12 percent of year-to-date box office. The movie ranks second all-time among February releases behind The Passion of the Christ, and is on its way to being one of the highest-grossing original animated movies ever.

On a worldwide basis, The LEGO Movie leads 2014 releases with $379 million (over 62 percent from the U.S).
