Depth of Square Enix

Waiting on the potential for a Disney Infinity reboot does involve a lot of, well, waiting ;). And some may think that after this much time, there's little hope for it. But it actually makes sense for sales of the Finding Dory Play Set to occur first, especially if the reboot would involve a different pricing structure that could otherwise adversely affect those sales. Fans would be thrilled to see the same Play Set / Expansion Game / Toy Box combo taken over from a separate licenser (myself included) - it just seems unlikely for both scale & financial risk. Producing the Toy Box as a standalone product would leverage what's already been done & leverage the community in sustaining it. But the new licenser could also treat the Disney Infinity figures like amiibos - they could pick & choose which characters would be viable add-ons to select games (rather than trying to incorporate >100 characters into the storylines of all games).

On that note, another great potential for the reboot is Square Enix. They have had great success in storylines incorporating their characters with Disney characters & themes, and the 3.0 special unlock of the Keyblade essentially announced Kingdom Hearts intentions for Infinity. Their own Kingdom Hearts game was delayed, which opens another door of opportunity - what if Kingdom Hearts figures could enhance that gameplay, either by character specials or the ability to play the game through with those extra characters? These new owners of Infinity could leverage the base & new physical sculpts, both Disney & Final Fantasy, to provide the game added depth ;). An added advantage for Disney Infinity fans to see Square Enix take ownership of the Toy Box is that there wouldn't be separate licensing negotiations for the other Kingdom Hearts (e.g. Final Fantasy) characters - Square Enix owns those ;).

It would also be very cool to see the Heartless, the Nobodies, the Unversed, & the Dream Eaters make their way into the Toy Box - they would be great for Toy Box Tales. Great. They would mix well with all of the existing characters & themes, plus the new ones, including Final Fantasy characters. In this way, Square Enix could make the Toy Box their own like no other licenser could. They have these pre-established storylines & villains that would mix with the existing IP really well. Since they'd be licensing Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars IP anyway, they'd also have lots of new ways to expand their Kingdom Hearts series in the future. 8-)

And on a side-note, it might be our best chance to finally get Goofy :D.

What an amazing Idea! Not only would we get Disney Infinity back, but we'd get famous characters such as Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, Sora. Riku and Kairi as Figures in the game! Aw man, Imagine how Cloud could interact with Iron Man Spider-Man and Black Panther! I'd support this. Especially considering Disney's amazing partnership with this wonderful famous company on Kingdom hearts.

Others had mentioned it before, but I only recently realized what a great impact it could mean for the Toy Box reboot.

Let's say Square Enix acquires ownership of the Toy Box and licenses the associated IP, and let's say they shift the business model to subscriptions. They would want a series of Toy Boxes to kickstart this, not only to introduce the new characters, but to showcase the Toy Box engine to new builders and showcase ongoing community content from experienced builders. With the reboot, this series of Toy Boxes could unlock all of the toys all over again - from characters to building blocks to themes. Some of the boxes could be tutorials that show the players how to build the types of games they just played in prior toy boxes - and these tutorials could unlock the corresponding Templates. And this series of Toy Boxes could have an overall storyline that reflected the reboot & reflected that new ownership...

The Villains of Infinity (Maleficent, Davy Jones, Ultron, Darth Vader, etc.) are thoroughly disgusted with their failed attempts at a Toy Box Takeover. They have been unable to defeat the Heroes physically or intellectually, so they decide, much to the dismay of the Inside Out toys, to defeat them emotionally. They unleash the Heartless, to steal that essential spark - the heart, of every Hero - to leave them as discarded Nobodies. They are aided by the misguided invention of Ansem the Wise - who is betrayed by his apprentice, Syndrome, who uses the new invention, the Heartless Manufactory, to create the Emblem Heartless. And Time is also on their side. But the Villains do not yet realize that they are toys, that the Heartless will eventually turn on them as well, creating a Void, destroying the Toy Box. They do not realize that the sparks of all toys in the Toy Box are a mystical transference of Imagination from the hearts of children, young and old. In a series of Toy Box Tales, Sora discovers the Heartless, the nature of the Toy Box, and through a challenging adventure acquires the Keyblade. King Mickey is consulted in Cinderella's Castle, and an epic quest is begun to gather the heroes to combat the threat to the Toy Box. This journey across the realms is a celebration of the themes, abilities, & game genres of the mystical Toy Box engine, occasionally stumbling upon ancient ruins & concept art of its Architects. They are also aided by the Toy Box Master Artists, creators of worlds. These expert game designers & storytellers continue to provide more of the journey, and even visit them upon occasion as their Townsperson Avatars. Millions of builders throughout the Outer World are invited to apprenticeship, to aid the Heroes in their quest, through creative Toy Box Tales, perhaps even to gain the title of Master. For the creative minds of the Toy Box Master Artists are so great that they manifest Dream Eaters into the Toy Box from their subconscious - Spirits & Nightmares, depending on their mood. And there is an even greater threat hidden within the realms of the Toy Box - the Unversed, those unaware, those manifested by the negative emotions - who simply seek to destroy everything. It is an ongoing quest of Imagination & Heart. Recapture the Spark.

Square Enix could totally own this reboot. It would be great. 8-)

LOL! Yep, same for me - but we're not the ones who may need convincing ;).

It's just fun to think about Square Enix being able to weave in their own IP & integrate the best parts of Infinity into the reboot, give credit to the entire Disney Infinity Team for the game's original creation, include the Toy Box Master Artists, and make it all part of the story.

Imagine this new Toy Box Door that could not only sequence a set of Toy Boxes into a storyline, but allows you a choice of where you go next in this never-ending-story format. Imagine storyline forks being added after that Toy Box is available through Community Content.

The main storyline out of Square Enix could be a combination of character introductions, game design/genre tutorials, theming introductions, ability showcases, etc. Yet at the end of each Toy Box, you'd have the option to fork from the main story into whatever category you wanted - you could focus on all game design blueprints for example (this would essentially obsolete the tutorial boxes of the activity kit I made, but that doesn't matter - I'd adjust the kit accordingly) - if the licenser wanted to leverage IBM's advocacy of the educational value, I could make some of them myself - that would be fun (if not, no worries). The point is - having in-game tutorials to unlock Creativi-Toys & Gameplay Toys & associated Templates within the main storyline would encourage more builders, showcase the engine, & help sustainability. Plus, if you brought back the weekly challenges, the winning boxes could have the added reward of being their own storyline fork, whether it's for a character, or an ability, or a game genre, depending on the nature of the challenge. And in addition, everyone achieving Toy Box Master Artist would gain their own fork. There might be multiple ways to get to a particular box, and that's fine, too. The earlier idea of "following" an artist, or creating a "playlist" on a given game genre or ability, etc. would be choosing parts of this one overall Toy Box Story. When you submit any Toy Box that's accepted into Community Content, it becomes part of that story - winning a challenge & achieving Master Artist would provide the added reward of being in the "official" sequence. Fun stuff. 8-)
